Glenda Little, Owner of Dressy Designs

Hi Glenda! What was your deciding factor to become involved with the wedding industry?
Hi Tamara! Thank you for asking me to take part in your vendor feature!
The deciding factor for me becoming involved in the wedding stationery side of the industry was my love of creativity using computer softwares and the demand of custom design stationery in the area where I live. Becoming involved in the wedding industry was not anything I directly planned, but I’m forever grateful that it happened. What a fun industry it is… working with happy people!

Can you give us a little history of Dressy Designs?
In January 2006 after 31 years of employment, I retired from the Texas Department of Human Services. I was a computer software trainer and also responsible for creating brochures, newsletter, web sites, etc., for the region. I knew after retirement (I was just the young age of 50 🙂 that I wanted to start a business and work out of my home, but I was not sure what I was going to do. Later the next month, a close friend of mine had a son that was getting married. I offered to design and print their wedding programs as a gift. I met with the bride, gathered the information and began the process. I added my name and number to the back of the wedding program thinking maybe I would get a few phone calls from other brides. I knew this is something that I would LOVE to do. I was back on the computer creating… I had missed that in the one month that I had been retired. And that is how my business got started, I did get phone calls from other engaged couples and gratefully, I’m still getting phone calls. I never forget that this is more than a business, it is a life-changing day for the couple and I’m honored to be a part of it.

What is your favorite part of working with brides?
The “tagline” of my business is “Where you design your one of a kind”. In my business, the bride is the designer of her wedding invitation. I believe that the invitations are a very important part of the wedding, it’s the first item people will see that reflects what to expect, so I truly believe the bride and groom should have a role in the design. As the designer it also gives them control over the allocated budget. During the design, they choose their paper colors, size of invitation, fonts, monogram, graphics, embellishments such as ribbons, Swarovski crystals, broach ribbon sliders, etc. Then I have the fun job of putting their design choices together. The RESULT of this process is one of my favorite parts of my job. Each and every invitation outcome is a surprise and a true reflection of their personality. Another favorite part I LOVE is “talking weddings” with the bride and usually her mom. I love hearing all their wedding ideas and I love sharing some great ideas that I’ve received from other brides.

What kind of experience can a bride expect to have coming to you for the first time?
During the initial consultation we spend time looking at samples of my work, we look at paper choices, colors and discuss any ideas, creative suggestions, and visual or inspirational items she would like to incorporate into the design of the wedding stationery. We discuss my process, timeline and the cost involved. My main objective during this time is to find out about her style, taste and personality. It is my goal to transform her vision into reality. The initial consultation normally takes 1 hour… but if the bride and her mom like “talking weddings” a 2 hour consultation is not unusual.

You have also become quite popular with your candy buffets! What do you use for your inspiration when creating a design?

I LOVE creating candy tablescapes!! I got involved with this in May 2010 after a bride ask me to embellish her apothecary jars for her candy buffet . I designed paper die cut tags for each jar that displayed the name of the candy. I added ribbons, crystals, ribbon slider, etc. to all the jars. I realized how much I loved all the detail work this involved. In July I offered to set up a friends candy buffet at her wedding and I was hooked after that. For inspiration, I use my knowledge that I have already established from the bride about her style, taste and personality. I give the bride the choice to be involved in the design or to allow me to surprise them at the reception… and so far I’ve been allowed to surprise each one. That is so much fun and rewarding as well. And the best part of it all is that I get to attend the wedding reception and witness their biggest day of their lives.

Thanks again Tamara for asking me to be a part of you vendor features… it was FUN!
